What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is a digital ‘passport’ that authenticates the identity of a website and encrypts information sent to the server. Encryption is the process of scrambling data into an undecipherable format that can only be returned to a readable format with the proper decryption key.
Why do I need an SSL certificate?
Going forward it is likely that SSL certificates will be compulsory if you want to be able to collect data, store personal information and process bookings and purchases via your website. Angelfish now advises all clients to purchase an annual SSL Certificate, in addition to their annual web hosting contract. Here are some of the reasons why SSL certificates are so crucial:
1. Encrypts sensitive information
The information you send on the Internet is passed from computer to computer. Any computer in between you and the end server can see personal data, usernames, passwords, and other sensitive information if it is not encrypted. When an SSL certificate is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to.
2. Protects You From Cybercriminals
Cybercriminals work to identify weakness(es) in your network…mostly, when information is transmitted. If your website does not have an SSL certificate it will impossible to escape the rising tide of cybercrime, which is estimated to cost the world over £4 trillion annually by 2021.
3. Builds Trust & Brand Power
With SSL certificates, your customers will see visuals like lock icon and green address bar that indicates well-trusted encryption is in use. Well, if I as a customer will see that on your website, I will be assured that my information is traveling safe.
